NEFYTO

Nefyto (Nederlandse Stichting voor Fytofarmacie) is the trade association of the Dutch agrochemical industry. The members of Nefyto are companies that market crop protection products in the Netherlands.

Organization

Affiliated to Nefyto are companies that manufacture and/or market crop protection products in the Netherlands. Nefyto has 13 participants, together representing 95% of the turnover of crop protection products in the Netherlands. Nefyto promotes the common interests of these companies.

Organizational structure

Nefyto consists of a general board, in which all the member companies are represented, and an executive board which is responsible for the day-to-day running of the organization and for external affairs. As of 1 April 2010 the executive board consists of:

  • Meerten Smit (chairman; BASF Nederland)
  • Han Rupert (Makhteshim-Agan)
  • Arie de Jongh (Dupont Crop Protection Products)
  • Carlos Nijenhuis (Certis Nederland B.V.)

Nefyto's advisers on legal and policy matters are Brabers in The Hague, at whose offices the secretariat is also situated. Brabers undertake a great deal of non-secretarial work for Nefyto as well and are also Nefyto's point of contact for internal and external relations. Nefyto matters are handled by Maritza van Assen (director), Jo Ottenheim (secretary) and Armida Vleghert (executive secretary).

In addition, the following permanent working groups are active:

  • The Agriculture Working Group deals with the approval of crop protection products and agricultural aspects of the use of such products.
  • The Core Team consists of senior specialists, each co-ordinating one or more groups of specialists  in the field of environment, water, worker safety, food safety and agriculture.
  • The Distribution Working Group co-ordinates matters of logistics (such as labelling and storage).
  • The Communications Working Group is responsible for Nefyto's policy on communications.

Activities

Nefyto engages in a constructive dialogue with all parties that have an interest in crop protection, such as policy-makers, the agricultural and horticultural sectors and organizations representing the general public or consumers. Nefyto achieves this in a number of ways:

  • Nefyto actively participates in consultative structures concerned with legislation and policy in respect of crop protection and sustainable agriculture and horticulture.
  • Nefyto informs interested parties about crop protection products in the broad sense of the word, via a variety of publications and via its website.
  • Nefyto provides speakers for symposia and conferences.
  • Nefyto actively provides information to the Dutch (agricultural) press.
  • Nefyto publishes, on a three-monthly basis, the Nefyto Bulletin, which is distributed free of charge to individuals and organizations involved in any way with crop protection in the Netherlands.

International

To an increasing extent, the crop protection product industry operates at an international level. Policy with respect of crop protection products is also increasingly being determined at a European and world-wide level.

At a European level, Nefyto is affiliated with the European Crop Protection Association, ECPA. At a world-wide level, the interests of the agrochemical industry are promoted by Croplife International, CLI
